A trade order gets the maker fee if the trade order is not matched immediately against an order already on the order book, which adds liquidity to the order book.

Example: You bid $1.00 to buy XYZ Token, but the lowest price anyone is selling it for on the order book is $1.05.

Your $1 buy bid is “making” more liquidity for on the order book since it is staying there until someone accepts your offer.
