They achieve this by processing transactions off-chain and then settling the final result on the Layer 1 blockchain. One example of a Layer 2 cryptocurrency is the Lightning Network, which operates on top of the Bitcoin blockchain and enables faster and cheaper microtransactions. Another example is the OMG Network (formerly OmiseGO), which is built on Ethereum and aims to facilitate fast and low-cost transfers of digital assets.
